Zen words: “担板漢” Tan ban kan

Don't see only one side: 一歩離れてみて

This is the word that comes out when scolding, and means “idiot”. 「担」Tan means to carry, 「板」Ban is a board and「漢」Kan is a man.

Why is the man carrying a board idiot? Please imagine a wide, long board. If you carry the board over your right shoulder, you can see the left side but can’t see the right side at all. The reverse is also the same. And walking with such a board is dangerous to hit others. It’s unwelcomed and mischievous behavior.

In other words, it refers to the foolishness that we see things only one side, judge and act unilaterally, and annoying others. It is a scolding word that we shouldn’t get caught up in only one side.

When we face something, the more we seriously think about, the more we can focus and lose sight. At the such time, if we take a step back and review the problem, we may be able to see the whole thing and make new discoveries. Or we will feel better. It may be a trick to live comfortably.

これは叱る時に発する言葉で「馬鹿者」という意味だそうです。「担板」板を担ぐ、「漢」は男。

なぜ板を担ぐ男が馬鹿者なのか？幅の広い長い板を想像してください。その板を右肩に担げば、左側はよく見えるが、右側は全く見えなくなります。逆もまた同じ。そしてそんな板を担いで歩いたら他の人にぶつかって危ない。迷惑な話です。

つまり、物事を一面的にしか見ないで一方的に判断して行動し、他の人に迷惑をかける愚かさを指す言葉です。一面にとらわれるなという叱りなのです。

何か問題に直面した時、真剣に考えるほど集中して回りが見えなくなるものです。そんな時に一歩離れて問題を見直してみると、全体が見えて新しい発見ができることがあります。もしくは気持ちが楽になるでしょう。これは楽に生きるコツかもしれません。
