Zen words: “直心是道場” Jikishin kore dojo

“直心” is a pure, obedient heart and a consciousness that accepts things as they are. "是" is this. "道場” means the place to practice.

When a disciplinant is looking for a training place, he asked a person who was enlightened without becoming a priest. And he answered as below.

Training is not only possible in a training place. Trying to stay in a heart all the time is an ascetic training.

If you want to go to the Himalayas and practice, you can do that, and if you want to perform cold water ablutions under a waterfall, you can do it.

However, it is not a practice to go somewhere, but a practice to stay in a quiet heart at any time, whether in the crowds of society or on the road of a tough life. A silent heart like a water surface without ripples, a peaceful heart without judging things and without being swayed by emotions.

The heart is not somewhere far away. Always here.

直心こそ修行の場であるという意味です。ある修行者が「修行の場所を探している」と出家せず悟りを開いた人に尋ねました。すると答えはこうでした。

直心とは純粋、素直な心、ものごとをありのままに受け入れる心のことです。修行は道場だけでしかできないのではありません。いかにいつでも直心でいようとすることが修行なのです。

ヒマラヤに行って修行したければすればいいし、滝に打たれたければ打たれればいい。しかしどこかに行くことが修行ではなく、どんなときも直心でいようとすることが修行なのです。社会の雑踏の中にあっても、苦しい人生の道中にあっても。ものごとを判断せず、感情に翻弄されず、波紋のない水面のように静かな心。

それはどこか遠くにあるのではなく、いつもここにある。
